Being a stay at home mom and having your own business is not an easy feat. But today’s moms are quite resourceful and they know that with great organization and time management anything can be achieved.

Now, if you are a stay at home mom just starting out in the business waters here are some great tips on how you can plan out and achieve all your future goals.

Setting clear and achievable goals

Multitasking can, at times, be quite difficult. In the process of wanting to do everything perfectly some things can get overlooked.  Having a clear plan of what you want to achieve, and in which timeline, is important. That way you won’t have to double back very often.

Running a business is demanding, but so is running a household. The balance is crucial, so set aside time for both. This is where the short term goals help a lot.

Have each day planned on both fronts (business and household) but reserve time for unexpected events. Let’s be honest, with kids, regardless of their age, something always happens, and you need to have room to deal with that without making your business suffer for it. It is tricky but achievable.

The best way to do this is by creating spreadsheets, whether it’s one on your computer or phone, or if you prefer you can draw out one and hang it in your home. Put in all the activities and short term goals for that week, and see the timetable fill up. It will give you a clear picture on where you might be able to save some time or even cut corners.

Having your day laid out hour by hour is truly sobering and it can really help with overall time management.

Add a few long term plans

At some point your kids will move out, and in a blink of an eye it will be retirement time. This is something that awaits us all.

You don’t want this to catch you off guard, so start saving up and making plans for your retirement. This way you’ll be able to afford the best luxury retirement available, and let’s be frank, you deserve it.

Long-term retirement and financial plans are something you should definitely have mapped out, that way you will feel a lot more secure. Of course, a lot will happen over the years, but knowing you have set aside something for old age always make things a bit better, doesn’t it?

Now, you are probably asking the age old question, how to actually put that money aside with all yourmonthly expenses. The most efficient way is to set aside a sum of money, for example from 50 to 150 dollars a month. If you are having a great month, go for the bigger amount, and if it is birthday or holiday season, then opt for the minimal.

Do the calculations in advance for the minimal sum, so that you know how much will it amount to later on. That way you can have a clear picture what you can expect when it’s time to start spending that money.

Make sure your keep home and work life separate

After all, you are running a business, and you need to make sure that you have everything in order so that you can make all the necessary plans for current and future endeavors.

Being your own boss means that you are responsible for your own income, insurance payments and retirement fund. A lot of stay-at-home moms overlook some of these issues leading to greater financial problems in the future.

This is why you need to run separate finances for your home and for your business. The two cannot overlap, and you should not use one to cover other – it can turn into a continual loop that will leave you without a safety net.

Don’t forget about your needs

I know, this seems impossible with everything you need to juggle. But it is necessary: if you run out of fuel, both your family and your business will suffer. You won’t be able to achieve any of the set goals, and the future plans will go down the drain.

Take care of yourself now, so that when future comes you get to enjoy it to the fullest. It is the little things that keep us sane – an hour or two of rest, a good book and a spa day here and there. So make sure you squeeze that into your itinerary. You can thank us later.
