Book Review: Nickerbacher

*I was provided with this book, Nickerbacher, free of charge so I could read it and create this review.  All opinions are my own.*

NickerbacherTerry John Barto has created a character both children and adults will enjoy.  There are a lot of references my daughter, who’s 8, did not pick up on in this story, but I sure did.  She did enjoy the lovely illustrations and the moral of the story.

Nickerbacher is the story of a dragon who longs to be a stand-up comedian.  The princess he protects supports him on his journey to La La Land.  His dream is laughed at by many, but that doesn’t stop Nickerbacher from trying his best.

I liked that the princess character in this book has her own sense of self.  She even tells the prince “I don’t want to be rescued!”  Princess Gwendolyn is a great supporting character for Nickerbacher.  She understands that sometimes you need to be “you” and not who other people think you should be.

The Prince, Princess and Nickerbacher do finally get to La La Land, and the dragon gets his chance to audition for the Late Knight Show.  He gets some resistance at every step of the way.  However he does get a chance to perform after all.  And once he gets his jitters out he’s actually pretty good!

I don’t want to give away the whole story, but it’s a pretty happy ending.

Nickerbacker is a good story with a great message.  I’d recommend reading it with your kids if you get the chance.
